Perugia

Perugia is on a hill about 450m. high, in proximity to the Apennines. The temperature in Perugia is on average 10 degrees less than in Rome. The Dipartimento di Matematica e Informatica is located within the medieval walls, but one has to go uphill for about 200m. in order to reach the center of town (Vannucci Street, City Hall, Cathedral) within the Etruscan walls. Walking in Perugia is common, but be ready to go uphill and obviously downhill. At the end of November the climate is cold, with a good chance of rainy days. Moreover, Perugia is usually enveloped by the tramontane, a Northern strong cold wind (even Dante cited this characteristic of Perugia in Paradise XI), that suggests you wear suitable warm clothes. Several colleagues from Northern Europena Countries, where the temperature is often below zero, consider Perugia colder than their own country just because of the wind although the temperature is seldom under zero. Perugia is a university town and therefore seems mainly inhabited by young people. There are no dangerous areas but one may see some drug abusers wandering around. The cold weather may be a good deterrent for the ill-intentioned, if any. However it may not be wise to be out alone late at night. La Biblioteca Comunale (City Library) is perhaps among the oldest Italian public libraries (est. 1582): we will try to organize there an exhibition of manuscripts and books of Mathematics. There are also l'Accademia di Belle Arti (Academy for Arts) and il Conservatorio di Musica (Music Conservatory). The last Saturday and Sunday of each month there is a Street Market of Antiques and Collections. It is relevant to the themes of the Congress to mention people such Luca Pacioli, Ignazio Danti, Piero della Francesca, and Giuseppe Nicasi. In 1509 there were printed "Divina Proporzione" and "Euclide Megarense" by Luca Pacioli: a copy of the latter book is on view at the historical library of the University.

Il Dipartimento di Matematica e Informatica (Department of Mathematics and Informatics):
It is possible to wireless connect to the web in some designated areas of the Department; there will be a classroom available for the Congress attendees accommodating about 150/200 people, supplied with a video projector as well a slide projector. The Department has 3 permanent staff members who are computer technicians, and take turns in order to have at least one of them always available. The Department has 3 computer rooms, with Internet connection, and a library, with a reading room. The Department is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 7pm. On Saturday morning it will be open for the Congress until 2pm when the alarm is automatically armed. Just in front of the Department there is a reserved parking area for the personnel, that is always quite full: you may park there for € 2,92 a day, if there are available spaces. It is far better to leave the car at the hotel and walk. The rush-hour traffic is quite intense and many one-way streets may be difficult to navigate through if you are not familiar with Perugia.
